Inflammation Be Gone Shake and 30 Days to Fit

I’m feeling a little stiff from Saturday’s run.  We went for a long walk on Sunday to try and work out the kinks.  It helped but my hips and legs are still feeling the effects of a good long run.  The following shake is based on a recipe from Thrive: The Vegan Nutrition Guide by Brendan Brazier.  The walk yesterday, this shake and my easy run of 9 miles today sure helped to make the body better. Not too sweet. A little spice from the ginger. A very filling and rewarding way to start the day. The shake is packed [...]

Focus and Control plus Pumpkin Pineapple Barley Pudding

Going the distance in endurance sports means you need to focus. You need to maintain control of body and mind. What does this mean to me and does it mean the same to you? Focus: As we’re running along and the miles start to add up, it’s normal to lose focus. Sometimes zoning out isn’t a bad thing but you need to bring yourself back to the job at hand. To do this, you need an “on switch”. That switch is anything personal to you that reminds you of the job you need to get done.  It might be a [...]

This Chapter in My Life and Apple Pean-ola

On the radio the other day, the interviewer asked the guest “If you named your life right now as a chapter in a book, what would that chapter be called?” I looked at Ted as we drove along and said “Amazing”. He said “excuse me?”  I said, “I’d name the chapter of my life right now “Amazing”. A wonderful husband.  A loyal dog and running partner.  My 2nd marathon, The 115th Boston Marathon in 3:47 (who could have imagined?!?) The California Raisin Bread Contest winner. The popularity of my award winning mini loaf.   The benefits and fun of using and [...]

Getting Through It and Morning Fruit

It was a rainy morning.  The alarm went off and I got up, went through the ritual of brushing teeth, putting on workout clothes and tying back hair, then I went downstairs and laid on the sofa to listen to the rain. I fell asleep.  When the kitchen light went on, because Ted was getting ready to workout, I went back upstairs, got under the comforter and fell asleep once again while listening to the rain.  I love listening to the rain but never allow myself time to stay in bed and enjoy it.  This morning I did. There were [...]

Chocolate with Francois: Yogurt Parfaits, Chocolate Granola and Bananas

I’ve made a lot of granola but I’ve never added mini chocolate chips.  This is a classic Francois Payard treat from his book Chocolate Epiphany.  Francois says this makes a wonderful quick weekday breakfast.  I think it’s more like a wonderful dessert that Ted and I could eat over and over again.  Not difficult at all and very accommodating to make in part ahead of time. The group Chocolate with Francois featured this recipe and it was chosen by Julie of Little Bit of Everything.  Terrific pick! So good!  This ones going to be a “repeat offender” on our table. [...]

Tips and Tuaca Liquor Apple Sauce

Before I offer the following recipe,   I wanted to share some thoughts.  With all the holiday recipes I'm seeing out there in blog land and magazine world, I'm seeing JUST as many diet control tips and "stay healthy through the holiday" blurts.  That made me want to ask, what do you think about all these tips?   Do you read them?  Do they work for you?  Do you have your own "stay healthy - diet maintenance" strategy that works?  I've hopped on the bandwagon and am offering the following that works for me. Exercise:  It's difficult getting up as early [...]
