Faxon New Havon 20K Road Race

Signed up for this race to check my progress leading up to the Boston Marathon just over a month away.  I was fairly happy with the result. Initially, I was excited about this USATF race.  It wasn't quite a half marathon as 20K is about 12.42 miles.  Something about that gave me false confidence about it being a "short" race.  Anyway, as the day of the race approached, I started getting my usual extreme race nerves wondering what was I thinking that this was going to be "short and sweet"?!  Still, it would be a nice quick get away to [...]

USATF Empire State Classic 4 Mile Road Race

Location: SUNY Cortland  Team Adirondack First time ever doing this kind of event.  Run as part of a team towards the overall win.  Unfortunately team USATF Adirondack only had 3 participants, all older runners.  Monopolized by team Niagara with some impressive young runners then Long Island with a small showing. It was fun to look forward to a shorter distance run.  More excitement than anxiety.  That should tell me something. "The race was relatively flat with one uphill/downhill.  Long straightaways with mostly sweeping turns. Last 250m on grass to the track and last 150m on track to finish line. "   [...]

Indianapolis Monumental Marathon 2019

In researching most likely BQ marathons for fall running, it seemed a lot of people achieved their goal on this Indianapolis course.  In addition, I had never been to Indiana and so to add to my list of state races, I opted in.  It seemed like the course had runners going past historic monuments and other interesting areas.  A lot of support by way of aide stations and crowds.  Names were on the bibs if you registered early enough and you know what a boost it can be to hear your name yelled out during a race!   Since I like [...]

Just a regular bowl of cherries, at least through August

We are coming into the ripening dates for cherries, according to the pickyourown.org/NYharvestcalendar.  Have you seen them in the stores?  They are all so deep red, shiny and mouthwatering fresh looking.  I've never been able to resist fresh cherries when they look so vibrant. It's been told that cherries pack a pretty awesome healthy punch such as, a better nights sleep, balance blood pressure, reduce muscle soreness, fighting cancer, weight reducer, and control gout.  From fresh cherries to cherry juice, it seems we can't go wrong.   Source:  Eatingwell As for a recipe using cherries there are a number of [...]

Mushroom Tart

Years ago, we hosted a holiday party and I made a wild mushroom tart.  It was filled with assorted wild mushrooms and it was delicious.  I love mushrooms.  As a vegetarian, they often make an appearance in many homemade dishes. Nutritional benefits of mushrooms high in antioxidants, selenium, vitamin D, folate. 8oz of grilled portabella mushrooms and 8oz of shiitake mushrooms provide 3 g of fiber to benefit the digestive system reducing risk of heart diseaase. Fiber, potassium and vitamin C for a healthy heart. The mushroom stem is a good source of beta-glucans and chitins (dietary fibers) which can [...]
