Running in the Cold and Toasted Sorghum Soup with Greens and Beans

It’s Saturday and almost the end of another week into Boston Training. Sunday will conclude week six and it hasn’t been easy.  The winter weather has challenged almost every run.  I’ve been forced to hit the treadmill a few times.  Fortunately, long runs have been done all on the road, even though they’ve been miserably slow.  I’m not sure I get the best workout on the treadmill because I crank up the speed in an effort to get it over with quicker.  This means I’m exceeding training paces. Could this lead to injury? Hope not. The long runs, as I [...]

Weighty Matters and Gluten Free Sugar Free Banana Nut Breads

From “1001 Pearls of Runners Wisdom” Quote by Don Kardong If you run 100 miles a week, you can eat anything you want.  -Why? Because a) you’ll burn all the calories you consume, b) you deserve it; and c) you’ll be injured soon and back on a restricted diet anyway. Let’s not get injured and lets not get “weighty”.  Nut flours paired with banana and a touch of cinnamon. The house smells great and the little banana nut breads taste superb.  These breads are baked small because the batter is very dense, in fact it will hold it’s form so [...]

Tis That Season and A Rustic Pasta Recipe

It’s all around the lights, the ornaments, the music, tree top angels, the seasonal aromas… but I’m just not ready. My shopping is almost done but the spirit hasn’t moved me.  I’ve been baking but not designating anything strictly “Christmas”.   Maybe it’s the lack of snow.  I look outside and still see green.  The trees look lifeless but they aren’t wearing a blanket of white.  When I run in the morning, I smell the occasional wood burning fire and I get a fleeting sense of the time of year.  It’s nice not to have to run through snow and try [...]

Orecchiette with Broccoli Rabe and Beans

Are you running a race this weekend?  Maybe the Chicago Marathon?  Maybe the Mohawk Hudson Marathon?  Maybe a half marathon or even a 10K?  If so, CARB UP with this super dish.  You’ll definitely get that PR! Imagine making your own pasta.  Fresh and oozing with flavor.  It’s easier than you think.  Making your own “hats” or rather Orecchiette, will take about 1 hour.  *Based on directions from MarthaStewart.com. You need:  2 cups semolina flour + 1 cup all purpose flour + 1 tsp. salt + 1 cup water(divided).  Let's get old fashioned.  Lets think HOMEMADE! Mound the flours + [...]

Separation Anxiety

We’re on the road to Dayton, Ohio for the US Air Force Marathon.  This will be marathon number 5. I still remember my thoughts after running number 1:  “NEVER AGAIN!”  Yeah sure. As we drive along on the long stretch of BORING, my thoughts switch between what Saturday’s race has in store for me and what Shane and Zoey are up to.  I wonder if the dogs are ok. If they might be suffering “owner withdrawal” in the same way I’m suffering “doggy withdrawal”.   It really bothers me to leave them.  I worry about little things.  I keep seeing Shane’s [...]
