Yasso’s Yes? or No? and Ratatouille Pasta

This week’s speed work was 800 repeats or some would call them Yasso 800’s.  The Yasso 800’s are for marathoners looking for a very specific time goal.  A lot of folk do the Yasso repeats then a lot of folk say they don’t work.  I incorporate them into my workout simply for variety. How to do the 800’s: First of all, the name "Yasso" is from Bart Yasso, a well known distance runner  who popularized the workout. This is how to do a Yasso 800 workout: Convert your marathon goal time in hours and minutes to minutes/seconds. Example: If your [...]

I Felt A (Capital “A”!) AMAZING!

Why do we have those truly wonderful totally energized days?  I had the best, I DO mean the best workout Sunday morning.  A 12 mile run at 8:54 pace and a 19.7 mile bike ride, average pace 13 mph.  After all that exercise, I didn’t feel as if I had done a thing!  What happened?! Why was my endurance level so good today?  I want that EVERY DAY! It might have been the massage yesterday. I was worried about that a day before a mid range run. My legs could have felt heavy. But no, the legs felt GREAT. It [...]

Everything Looks Good the Night Before and Stewed Rhubarb with Honey

When I look at my planned workout for the next morning, and it’s something challenging or a little different, I get excited and look forward to it.  The thought doesn’t occur how tough it might be.  EVERYTHING seems possible the night before, right?! Thursday was a day for interval training, something different as I progress from base marathon phase to pre-marathon phase workouts. The workout was to be 6 to 8 times 2 minute intervals with 1 minute recovery.  I thought “I can do 8, but I’ll go easy and settle on 7 x 2 minutes at about a 5K [...]

First it was the foot and The Secret Garden

Didn’t do a lot of running this week.  Last Sunday during a short 3 mile run/walk with Ted and Shane, my left foot started hurting. It was a nagging ache all day.  Monday through Wednesday, I continued with short runs tolerating that aching foot.  Thursday was a different story.  My entire lower half hurt from a tough leg session with the personal trainer and there was a pain in my ankle. Just walking with Shane resulted in aggravating the ankle.  The foot pain was gone, trading one pain for another. Friday, Ted took Shane for his morning walk but later [...]

Life After Boston and FOFF Spicy Sweet Potato Fries

The ups and downs after finishing a marathon. The feelings of elation because you crossed the finish line, the regret that you didn’t push harder. Then your mum and dad send you a gorgeous array of red roses and everything feels better. What is it about a rose? My favorite flower. Just perfect. Life after Boston should be time spent allowing your body to recover. In my case, there was little soreness which made it easy to jump right on my bike and begin getting ready for the NYC Bike Ride. The ride is 40 miles around the boroughs of [...]

Fort2Fort 2012 Recap

I get so excited about running a race or maybe it’s the opportunity to run with humans instead of the dogs. Bipeds make me try a little harder to meet goal pace. Come the morning of the race, my stomach does flip-flops.  I scan the room filled with other runners and take note of all the women, wondering who runs at what pace and thinking to myself “I bet she’s a fast runner.”   I get myself in a state where I just don’t want to run.  I don’t want to run by myself either which is why I always go [...]
