FoFF Caponata

I couldn’t leave the kitchen when this dish began to fill the air with such a tantalizing aroma.  It was so easy. Just get that crock pot out, chop a few ingredients up, open a can, open a jar or two and let it cook. Peggy of Pantry Revisted made the Caponata and loved it. See what she had to say. You will LOVE this recipe by Carla Vavala.  *Carla has a Facebook page, “Carla Vavala Creative Cook”. Make sure to keep up with her or better yet, cook along with us every Thursday and I’ll post your photos, your [...]

Complete meal in 45 minutes

You would think after a full day off from long walks, running, weights, and cycling I’d be ready for some serious working out.  It wasn’t so.  We had a terrific time in Niagara Falls and got home Monday afternoon.  Not sure if you’re vacations end this way, but when you arrive home do you take off at warp speed unpacking, vacuuming, grocery shopping and working twice as hard at settling back into routine?  It’s crazy!  Almost not worth going away. After the whirl-wind arrival home and putting a quick meal on the table for Ted, my parents and myself, I [...]

Joy Bauer Slim & Scrumptious Book Review

What do you do when someone sends you a cookbook to review? You start making dinners based on the recipes of course! And… if the first one or two result in an absolutely fantastic meal, you just keep using the book and making more of the recipes. Joy Bauer’s “Slim & Scrumptious” was just that book. Joy is a New York Times best selling author and the Nutrition Expert for the Today Show. In her book, she introduces us to why cooking at home is better for the entire family. Joy breaks it down to fats, salt, cuts of meat, [...]

CEimB Haddock Pepian

This week, Bri of Yoshimi vs. Motherhood chose a wonderful dinner which should have used chicken as the protein but, well, you know how that goes with this Pescetarian. Serving 2 3 fresh tomatillos The tomatillo fruit is surrounded by an inedible, paper-like husk formed from the calyx. As the fruit matures, it fills the husk and can split it open by harvest. The husk turns brown, and the fruit can be any of a number of colors when ripe, including yellow, red, green, or even purple. Tomatillos are the key ingredient in fresh and cooked Latin American green sauces. [...]

Running Masochist and Orange Shrimp and Broccoli

I sure hope that title doesn’t get me a lot of mail that freaks me out.  It doesn’t take much.   The following quote made me wonder, are marathon runners and ultra runners masochists? – or maybe we just like control in any form we can get it? By Derek Clayton in “The Masters of the Marathon” I don’t think you can become an outstanding runner unless you get a certain amount of enjoyment out of the suffering.  You have to enjoy absorbing it, controlling it and – ultimately- overcoming it. What’s going on at AppleCrumbles that is making us happy?  [...]

Winter Running or Not + No Fuss Fish

Who can run with all this gear on? Face mask to inhibit the breath.  Visor to stop the snow from hitting the face (one must tilt head for full benefit and possibly suffer neck strain).  A wool hat.  A ski jacket. Mittens that STILL allow for frozen thumbs. Snow pants, causing the running gait to adjust in such a way that it may appear an “accident” has occurred (runners are known for this).  Sneakers that kind of protect against the wet but allow slippage on snow covered, ice concealed roads. The only good thing about all that get up is [...]
