Bob’s Red Mill

Conquer Yourself and Bob’s Red Mill Muesli

“Yet those persons are happy and poets sing of them who conquer with hand and swift foot and strength”  Pindar, Greek Poet 500 BCE, as quoted in RRCA magazine, an article reprinted with permission by Mitchell Garner, RRCA V.P. During my 18 mile run on Sunday, I thought what a tough time I was having and cursed myself for walking while Ted ran on ahead.  Me, the seasoned marathoner walking while Ted forged ahead strong on his longest run to date.  My body didn’t have a lot to give after a 9 mile run on Saturday and I began thinking [...]

In the Woods and Got Some Goodies

Saturday morning. Isn’t that a good morning to sleep in? Catch up on sleep missed from early rising during a busy work week?  You’d THINK!  Sometimes your body has other plans. Today, the body said “we must arise and CONQUER at 5:30 AM!”, and so we did.  Shane and I conquered 9 1/2 glorious, sunny, warm miles through the switch backs, playing with other dogs, chatting with strangers, having so much fun and enjoying a relaxed run.  It was warm for the Shaner so we made several water stops around the golf course drinking and soaking Shane’s thick coat.  After [...]

Enter the Taper and Red Wine Gluten Free Chocolate Cake

This is it. The most looked forward to yet dreaded part of marathon training, tapering.  When all your hard work comes to a head, you need to reduce those miles and make every workout count. There are many schools of thought when it comes to tapering.  One rule is to reduce training by 15% in the third last week before a marathon. Reduce training again by 10% in the 2nd last week. The theory behind the taper is that the reduction in work will allow complete muscle recovery from months of training.  It will bring back the shock absorbing capacity [...]

Sleepers, Working Legs, Gluten Free Zucchini Orange Bread

This is how I get to spend my Saturday nights…The Sleepers What an exciting life we have! Monday morning was much more fun.  Ted got up early to work with me on the first day of building leg muscle.  Warm up:  20 minutes on the elliptical. Workout: 45 minutes working legs and abs.  Phew!  Ted’s tough!  We did leg press, dead lifts, squats, walking lunges, step ups (hate those!), leg extensions, leg curls, and calf raises.  3 sets x 10 to 20 reps.  This doesn’t sound too different from what I was doing weeks ago, but the weight was a [...]

23 Glorious Miles and Millet Salad

Today was my last long run before the marathon.  For confidence sake, I had to do 23 miles. It started out as a really bad run, got heaps better, went a bit down hill, then ended on a good note. I wore the top and skort that is the outfit for my marathon. I wore the pace band around my lower arm to protect against the chafe that the phone sleeve gives me.  I wore my Newtons and my Injinji socks.  I had the running fuel which I planned to use for the marathon. Banana, Gu Shot, Clif Shot, Sports [...]
