Broken Wrist Runner and Mushroom Farro Thick Soup

On December 10th I slipped on ice and broke my wrist. Never having broken anything before, I wasn’t sure what I had done.  Here is the reenactment of that fateful morning: Just wasn’t in the mood to do an out and back longer run of 14 miles. I thought I’d do a short run at the college track and leave the long run for Sunday.  After finishing several laps, I exited through the gate, looked down and saw a white patch of snow.  Turned out it was a sheet of ice.  The fall happened faster than any fall off a [...]

Dukes Tacoma Washington Special Recipes

Still in recovery mode.  The alarm is set the previous evening.  In the morning, when it sounds it’s ugly alert, the ears tune in to any rain or wind that might be going on outside.  If either one is heard, the body turns over, the eyes close and it’s another hour in bed.   So nice! There are a few motivators to put the body in motion:  1. The dogs.  They protest sleeping in and their protests are difficult to ignore. 2. Ted is hard core training for his upcoming triathlons. He gets out of bed by 4:30 am.  This can [...]

Running in the Cold and Toasted Sorghum Soup with Greens and Beans

It’s Saturday and almost the end of another week into Boston Training. Sunday will conclude week six and it hasn’t been easy.  The winter weather has challenged almost every run.  I’ve been forced to hit the treadmill a few times.  Fortunately, long runs have been done all on the road, even though they’ve been miserably slow.  I’m not sure I get the best workout on the treadmill because I crank up the speed in an effort to get it over with quicker.  This means I’m exceeding training paces. Could this lead to injury? Hope not. The long runs, as I [...]

26.2 and Teff Stew

Apple Crumbles FINALLY got the 26.2 trademark for baked goods.  I’ll be promoting healthy, energy supplying bars, cookies, bread, and muffins.  These will be foods that are easy to pack or grab & go when runners have an event.  Half marathon and marathon focused food. If you want to be a “test subject” let me know.  Boston Training, round 4 Going into week six of this year’s Boston training plan.  It hasn’t been easy since this winter has covered the roads with ice and snow.  We’ve had our share of very cold days which also challenge the body.  This coming [...]

Time for Stew

It's already September and, if you live in the North East, you are preparing to brace for cooler temperatures. Let's begin thinking about warming dishes like stew.  *Warning! Not vegetarian.  If you’re a vegetarian, proceed to the end and help me find a great substitute to make this stew right for me. This recipe is a slow cook recipe but not in the crock pot, it's cooked in a bean pot. The local paper featured this recipe from Celebrating Home  and I just knew it was one for Ted, modified of course! Serves 4 1 lb. round steak, in 1 [...]
