Broken Wrist Runner and Mushroom Farro Thick Soup

On December 10th I slipped on ice and broke my wrist. Never having broken anything before, I wasn’t sure what I had done.  Here is the reenactment of that fateful morning: Just wasn’t in the mood to do an out and back longer run of 14 miles. I thought I’d do a short run at the college track and leave the long run for Sunday.  After finishing several laps, I exited through the gate, looked down and saw a white patch of snow.  Turned out it was a sheet of ice.  The fall happened faster than any fall off a [...]

Brown Rice, Squash and Kale

"We find a place for what we lose. Although we know that after such a loss the acute stage of mourning will subside, we also know that we shall remain inconsolable and will never find a substitute. No matter what may fill the gap, even if it be filled completely, it nevertheless remains something else". --- Sigmund Freud (1961) Going through a tough time coming back to South Carolina. It’s a roller coaster ride of emotion. Running helps me find thoughts that are more manageable and calming.  I don’t expect the sense of loss to get easier. I do expect [...]

Lentil Loaf

We’ve had a lot of snow and we’ve had very cold weather.  Winter has barely begun. What are the next few months going to bring?  It’s scary to think about.  Sunday was milder in temperatures but still gloomy.  Since several craft fairs were going on around the city, the weather made it perfect to find an event and peruse the artistic creations.  One was right at our back door. Ted and I walked across the street to check things out. Not too many things appealed to us. It seems the majority of vendors at the fairs offer jewelry and since [...]

School of Fish: Brown Rice Risotto with Crab, Pistachios and Orange

After running on the weekend, maybe some would rest and allow their legs and feet to relax.  Not in our house. We don’t have kids, only our two dogs, but we seem to always be on the go.  One favorite hobby to occupy my time is baking and creating in the kitchen.  So I get back from a run, put on some comfy shoes (or go barefoot if I haven’t run too many miles) and start creating.  Baking sweet treats for Ted and myself is fun, but we can only eat so many and when the freezer is full, I’ll [...]

Sprouted Grain Strata with Spinach and Tomato

A healthy breakfast not only helps with mental alertness but also maintains control over our waistline.   Research continues to show that those who eat a breakfast made up of high protein, healthy carbs and fat weight less.  This is partially due to ingesting balanced nutrition to ward off cravings later in the day which may lead to over eating or at least chowing down on empty calorie items.   So get to it and eat your breakfast.  Check out the following recipe and keep in mind this is just as good for breakfast as it is for brunch or dinner.  The [...]

Skillet Cod with Orange Zest

This past weekend Ted and I went on a mattress hunting expedition.  It was unsuccessful.  We went to Sleep Number Bed and left in complete shock.  $6,000 for a mattress?!  Not for us.   We also went to our cell phone provided since we received an offer on the new iPhone good thru 9/30/2014.  Turned out that deal didn’t apply to us.  Hmm!???!  …and WHY did they send it to us in the first place?!  Another disappointment. So we ended up at a local football game:  Utica College vs. Brockport.   We stayed for most of the 2nd half with UC ahead.  [...]
