Just Move and Egg Rolls: Fitness and Food

I just read an article in the local paper "Keep on Moving: Exercise, even in small doses, offers tremendous benefits for senior citizens". Exercise in small doses offers tremendous benefits for EVERYONE, young, middle age, and seniors. The CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) offers weekly recommended physical activity requirements for optimal health on their site at CDC.gov. Some of the key points in the article referred to above and written by Judith Graham of Kaiser Health News were as follows: 1. Starting physical activity on a regular basis will make a person more likely to regain strength and [...]

Healthy Bites

Do you get magazines that you’re sure were never subscribed to?   We don’t subscribe to any yet a few continue to arrive in the mail.  They aren’t on my credit card bill so I’m not sure who’s paying for them.  Probably about three quarters of the publication is all advertisements so as quickly as it is taken from the mail box the magazine is put in the trash. One such magazine is Health. So does anyone know, is this SUPPOSED to be a free publication? or are they somehow getting money from somewhere that I don’t know about?  Anyway, I [...]

Best Protein You’ve Ever Tasted

“Soft and Delicious. Always moist with a crunchy surprise in every bite.  It’s like two treats in one!”    Once again, I got lucky and received a sample of bpi Sports BEST Protein Bars.  Cookies and Cream flavor and S’Mores.   These 2.3 oz bars pack a whopping 20 grams of protein with ZERO trans fat, 28 grams carbs, 3 grams of sugar.    After an 8 mile run, my longest run since April in Boston, my body screamed for protein.  These bars called my name and I opened the Cookies and Cream flavor.   It didn’t disappoint.  It was just as [...]

Brookgreen Gardens Memorial Day 5K Run and Then Some

Sunshine, warmth and family. Does it … CAN it get any better? I’ll answer that: No.  Things are perfect down here in South Carolina.  Here is another recap of our days in Eden. Sunday: Zoey and I went for a 7 mile run in the morning. Easy as she goes through the plantation and gearing up for a 5K race later in the day. I felt surprisingly good for running 18 the day before.  One thing that I’ve been meticulous about while exercising in the warm weather is hydration.  I’ve been taking this before and after my runs: Phytosport Complete [...]

Bagels with Bioenergy Ribose

D-Ribose Powder is a fundamental energy compound in the bodies production of ATP. What is ATP? Our bodies need carbohydrates, fats and proteins in order to function. However, in order to use these fuels for muscle action, they must be converted to an energy recognized by our cells called adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP). There are two ways the body produces ATP with oxygen, or Aerobically, or without oxygen, Anaerobically. More information found HERE. Ribose occurs naturally in all living cells.  ATP levels must be maintained for a healthy heart, muscular growth, and other tissues for basic body functions.  The heart needs more ATP than [...]

Eating Equals Energy and Oatmeal Cookies for Breakfast

When I first decided to run longer distances, 10 miles or more back in 2009, the thought of eating something before these early morning runs never occurred to me. After all, I had been going to the gym for years and running 5 miles a couple of hours before having any kind of food. I remember my first attempt at 12 miles on a stomach full of NOTHING.  An epic failure.  I was very careful working myself up to running that distance without getting injured although paid no attention to an equally important aspect of endurance which is nutrition.  Now, [...]
