CNYEats A Taste of Utica Broccoli Rabe

Just have to say, I'm pretty proud of myself.  I ran my 22 miles, my longest run before the Philly marathon on November 20th.  It wasn't fast but it wasn't a struggle either.  It was a rainy, cool morning and, to be quite honest, I actually ENJOYED the challenge of making myself "stay the course" for over 3 1/2 hours... in the rain...getting cold...getting wet.  It's these kind of runs that build confidence. Did you run this weekend?  Did you "stay the course" and complete your goal? BROCCOLI RABE The title says “Broccoli Rabe” , posted by Maria LaMonte and [...]

No Alarm and Sautéed Spinach with Pine Nuts and Golden Raisins

I HATE IT when that happens:  forgetting to set the alarm.  As you know, I had my workouts planned for the week.  Tuesday morning, if I got up at 4 am, I would have time to ride the bike for 45 minutes, lift weights, and run for 30 minutes with Shane.  At 3:15 I woke up and hated that I had to use the bathroom only to get back into bed for 45 minutes longer.  I thought I’d lay awake until the alarm went off but the next thing I knew, Ted was up and dressed.  I looked at the [...]

Race Recovery and Zucchini Fingers

Marathon Recovery  (Photos from Marathonfoto.com. Great place to get your pics!) The last thing we think about when training for a marathon is the recovery to follow.   Actually, recovery should take as much planning as the marathon training schedule.  Recovery begins within 15 to 30 minutes of finishing the race.   You need to start repairing your body and you do that by eating some healthy foods (healthy protein and carbohydrates), recovery drinks and/or supplements.   Those hours and the days following are just as important as every other phase of training because it allows you to be your best when you [...]

Cheesy Greens and Beans

Do you know your greens?  More specifically, the “Bitter Greens”?  Just in case there are a few “green challenged” out there, here’s a quick review. The term “bitter greens” covers those leafy vegetables that range from tangy to harsh tasting.  Among those with milder flavor are escarole and curly endive.  Examples of those with a harsher taste include dandelion, mustard and collards.  Popular kale is a more assertive green as well.  The very tender of leaves for any green can be added to salads for interesting flavor, ie  curly endive, young dandelion leaves.  The leaf should be green with gentle [...]

Realignment Exercises and Radicchio with Dates, Garlic, and Sunflower Seeds

Monday was a glorious day! Expecting rain and high winds, no such thing. It was 44 degrees (that’s a heat wave in Utica this time of year!) and winds at about 15 mph, not non-existent but manageable. Shane and I had a great run. I warmed up with 6 on the mill and finished with 5.35 with my doggy partner. The roads were clear and it was indescribably nice running in the warmer air. Hallelujah! Sure there was discomfort but the ease of snow free roads made a ton of difference. Don’t you just love it when everything goes your [...]

No Pressure Run and Lea & Perrins Roasted Vegetables

I’m really enjoying this recovery stage.  No pressure running.  My weekly totals for the month have been 16.5, 36.17 (not sure how that one happened???), and so far this week, I’m just under 14.  Today was my first speed workout of the month.  Interval miles for 4 1/2 .  I’m not sure I’ll have the energy for longer running tomorrow but I’m going to try since I’ve completed all weight workouts for the week.  Course I could ONE: Take a day off or TWO: Do another leg workout with weights.  I’ll check all body parts and enthusiasm at 4am tomorrow [...]
