Rainbow Slaw and Bosc Pear Salad PLUS This and That

Starting with this and that… Boston Training Thoughts: When I set out on my long run yesterday, my first 18 miler for this training season, I wondered why I was doing it. My feet were heavy and my run was slow. There was ice all over the road. But I did it to myself since I am an early morning runner. If the patience to wait was in me, I would have gone out 4 hours later and ran in 40 degree weather, no ice on the road.  In the end, I ran and was happy to have it under [...]

Staying Warm and Chickpea Salad

We’re keeping warm in South Carolina when our home town in New York is fighting off the cold. 60 degrees vs. 10 degrees.  It might be a tough decision but an extra day in S.C. is sure looking good. My hamstring feels a lot better when I run around the plantation. I guess the flat terrain, the clear roads (no snow in SC! YAY!), the warmer temps agree with my legs.  Ted and I will run a fun 5K tomorrow called The Prediction Run.  No timing devices allowed. Garmin stays home.  On the entry form, the runner predicts his/her finish [...]

Take A Breath and Cucumber Salad

From Shambhala Sun: “Slow Down, You Move Too Fast” Speed comes from being overly ambitious. We aren’t content with our own mind, so we become aggressive in how we conduct our life. In an effort to match a concept of what success might be, we fill our calendars and spend the whole day holding on to our “to do” list. We chase after appointments, phone calls and meetings with jealousy, competition, fixation and irritation—whatever it takes to get us where we think we need to go. When life still won’t match our concept, we get mad—mad that others are late, [...]

Marathon Favorites and Broccoli Squash Salad with Tahini Dressing

I recently read an article listing ten "must do" marathons for various reasons such as scenery to the challenge of the course. Some I've done, some I will do, some I would like to do, and some I will never do. The ten mentioned in the article: 1. Chicago = Ted and I will do this on October 13, 2013. 2. New York City = I've qualified to avoid the lottery system so I'm looking at 2014 to be my NYC year. 3. Boston = Done it 3 times and hoping for a 4th, 5th, 6th...10th. 4. Great Wall = [...]

Long Jog and Pickled Beets with Tagatose

This weekend was our anniversary.  13 years!  It hasn’t gone well. This and that and the other…you know.  Naturally falling in line with all other things upsetting, my running suffered.  My mind wasn’t in it so every step, every foot fall, felt like a bowling bowl dragging me back.  Saturday:  A 90 minute run. Ran with Ted and the dogs then finished the last 40 minutes alone. My mind was heavy with bad thoughts and upsetting things.  I was just happy to finish. In spite of everything, I looked forward to Sunday’s long run. 20 miles.  Taking it easy and [...]

Vitacost Inspired Kamut Salad with Carrots and Raisins

We were slugs on Sunday.  It started out with rain early in the morning.  We got soaked while running and someone tried to run me over.  Not just a close call but a true as the day I was born, attempt to hit me with their car.   Luckily I was near a telephone pole and able to duck in next to it.   Was the person drunk? At 6 am on a Sunday? Doubtful.  Was the person on their cell phone?  I threw my arms in the air and screamed at the top of my lungs. The reaction from the car [...]
