Marine Corp Marathon Taper and Micro Green Mix

Finally taper time is here.  Can’t say I’m not ready to reduce the miles although training for fall marathons wasn’t what it was supposed to be, miles nor speed work wise.  Every run was just an exercise in escaping painful thoughts of heartbreaking loss.. Although I looked at my plan daily the desire wasn’t there.  I just wanted to escape by being outside and trying to make the hurt go away, not by running fast repeats nor logging required miles, just to get lost in my thoughts somewhere outside myself and come back to have it all be a bad [...]

Recover, Sunsets and Roast Beet Salad with Asian Pear

Another holiday weekend is approaching.  Check out the terrific recipe for Roast Beet Salad! There are times when we might feel like our body can go forever with the same routine.  We work hard at staying fit in body and mind.  Then a time comes when it’s hard to get out of bed because the body hurts. What hurts one day is better the next but then another part hurts that was absolutely fine the day before. Words and actions by others around seem to grate on frazzled nerves.  If you’re thinking over training or burned out, we’re on the [...]

Good and Sore plus Avocado Salad Dressing

Before we get to the delicious recipe for Avocado Dressing (not just for salad greens), lets talk D O M S…..I don’t know about you but if I feel really sore after a weight workout, it makes me happy. Like a lot of people, I get into a comfort zone and do the same exercises day after day even though I’m fully aware that the body no longer reaps all the benefits.  *In order to stimulate the muscles, they need to be worked in different ways. The other day I came across an excellent article in Training Peaks talking about [...]

Green and Yellow Bean Salad with Ricotta

I told Ted I would just like to get out of my own head.  There seems to be one negative thing after another that continues to go round and around in my brain.  The media shoves bad news at us every day.  Finally I had to ask myself “what can you do about it?”  The answer? Nothing. The things that plague my thoughts, I have no control over.  Then I asked “If you have no control over these things, why worry?”  The answer makes no sense and that would be “Just in case….”.    Now if you think about it, 80 [...]

Yellow Split Pea Salad with Caponata

Do you ever give yourself a pat on the back for that experimental recipe that turns out so good?  If not, you should.  I do.  This recipe is one of those “HAIL TO THE CHEF!” kind of recipes.  The base of the recipe is a lot of fresh vegetables with cooked split yellow peas.  The complexity of taste and texture comes from adding 7 oz of Caponata and marinated artichoke.  Complex but light.  Vibrant but simple.  Serve chilled or at room temperature and finish with a drizzle of balsamic glaze. *I even added 1/4 cup to some Eggbeaters and made [...]

Warm Kale Salad with Hummus and Pistachios

Positive Affirmations:  One we’ve all heard before… “The greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure.”  - S.G.Eriksson Confidence. *The article dated January 30, 2013 by Geoff Roes reminds us that the power of the mind can pull us through our challenges and fears.  Last week, I went to the podiatrist fearing the worst.  This week, I have renewed confidence that my 2014 Boston Marathon won’t be a completely agonizing event.  First, I’ve put in the training. My body has been through physical stress, adapted physiologically and can run a little quicker with the same amount of stress. Second, [...]
