Sunday Long Run and Recipe Contests

Sometimes those long runs can be tedious and boring but not today.  The weather was perfect at 54 degrees with sunshine and no wind. I set out early, around 5:30 am and was on a mission.  I ate Natures Organics Oatmeal to get me going. Usually I eat a Honey Stinger waffle but I like these easy to mix oatmeal cups.  Pure and simple.  I took 3 SIS gels: 1 before heading out, 1 at 6 miles, 1 at 10 miles with UCAN ENERGY in my water bottle.  I would run a mile warm up, 2 x 5 miles at [...]

Syracuse Half Marathon 2018 Recap

Hey so tomorrow: get focused and let’s be open to having an awesome run – even if you start out sluggish.  The most important part about tomorrow is that you run a strong effort on some tired legs.  The actual pace may very from what’s “prescribed”.  It will be a vary challenging run, but look at what you’re training for – a 26 mile RACE.  So, this needs to be tough.  Stay present! If your mind starts to wander into the future, simply acknowledge and come back to present.  Run the mile you’re in. Now go kick some butt tomorrow!!” [...]

Boilermaker 2018

Every year I sign up to run the local 15K road race and end up regretting it come race weekend.  Why? Because the anxiety of racing makes me miserable. The reason for this pre race anxiety is a mystery.  One can only assume it is the anticipation of discomfort that comes with putting it all out there.  Self talk helps a little but ultimately end up with the same old question “Why am I putting myself through this? “  Enough about that. What matters most that in the end, I get to the starting line and run the race and [...]

Boston 2017

This race was #7 consecutive Boston run.  I put in the miles but not the hills nor the speed work so my confidence was lacking to the point of not wanting to run.  The weather looked good and I had a friend to run with this year so there really was no excuse. As usual, we drove in on the Saturday.  Then things got different.  We missed our exit to Hopkinton where we typically drive along the course.  We were lost and didn’t get back on course until Wellesley.  After about 5 miles, the course was closed, so we had to get to [...]

Broken Wrist Recovery and Oven Baked Egg and Lentil Dinner

This wrist recovery is going slow at least for me. I have been running, completing 44 miles this past week.  Running outside gets painful after a few miles. My wrist tends to cramp up.  I usually walk fast with Luke for about a mile and a half then take Zoey for 3 to 5 miles.  When I get home, I hop on  the treadmill and finish my run with a brace on the wrist.  Big news this week:  new treadmill!  Awesome! T50XER by Matrix. Love it.  I’ve resolved to do speed work on the mill and only if the roads [...]

Just Move and Egg Rolls: Fitness and Food

I just read an article in the local paper "Keep on Moving: Exercise, even in small doses, offers tremendous benefits for senior citizens". Exercise in small doses offers tremendous benefits for EVERYONE, young, middle age, and seniors. The CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) offers weekly recommended physical activity requirements for optimal health on their site at CDC.gov. Some of the key points in the article referred to above and written by Judith Graham of Kaiser Health News were as follows: 1. Starting physical activity on a regular basis will make a person more likely to regain strength and [...]
