Who can run with all this gear on?
Face mask to inhibit the breath.
Visor to stop the snow from hitting the face (one must tilt head for full benefit and possibly suffer neck strain).
A wool hat.
A ski jacket.
Mittens that STILL allow for frozen thumbs.
Snow pants, causing the running gait to adjust in such a way that it may appear an “accident” has occurred (runners are known for this).
Sneakers that kind of protect against the wet but allow slippage on snow covered, ice concealed roads.
The only good thing about all that get up is that no one can see the tears streaming down your face in frustration and angst as the discomfort and the frustration finally gets the better of you. It wasn’t a good day for running.
No Fuss Fish
Leave it to the California Raisin Org. to come up with a super easy recipe for fish that uses RAISINS! My first thought: Yuck! Raisins and Fish? No way! But really, it works.
Serves 2
- 15 oz can diced no-salt added tomatoes, drained
- 2 TBS raisins
- 1 TBS chopped black olives
- 1 tsp drained and chopped capers
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 1 tsp dried basil
- 1 lb sole or other light fish fillets (small, thin fillets)
Combine all the ingredients except the fish. in a medium bowl. Let marinate at room temperature for about 15 minutes.
Preheat the broiler and set the rack about 4 – 6 inches from the burner.
Place the fish on a foil lined baking sheet that is sprayed lightly with non-stick spray. *If your fillets are really small and thin, over lap them slightly.
Top fish with the tomato mixture and broil for 6 to 8 minutes or until the fish is opaque and flakes easily.

Do you have a recipe that uses raisins and it’s just plain WEIRD that the raisins should taste so good in that recipe?

I have to run in this horrible cold tomorrow morning! I think i am going to have to purchase a ski mask before then. Sigh.
Love raisins in odd dishes! I’ve made quite a few savory dishes with them and love them…probably because of the weird factor lol.
I swear when I’m running in the cold it looks like I should be sled riding with all the gear I have on!! 🙂
Hope your next run is better…….
I love the addition of raisins to this dish. I’m sure it adds just the right amount of sweetness! And bless your precious heart! You are bundled up and ready to go! You might want to consider moving to Austin. We’re reaching 75 degrees today! Thank you so much for sharing with me today. I hope you have a lovely weekend.
hahaha…wait, I shouldn’t laugh, I can feel your running misery!
Frozen thumbs/hands are the worst. I’ve never tried running in a balaclava but the love-hate relationship I have with such face masks makes me think I’d just get angry at the thing and throw it on the ground mid-run.
The fish looks awesome! I love the raisins. I have a lentil loaf recipe that uses them and tastes surprisingly wonderful.

You are so well tucked in to go running in this freezing weather! Good for you!!
That fish dish looks quite appetizing, easy yet so flavourfull!
Hi,
It seems you are built to take it. It really is tough going for a winter run every now an then.
If I go for a long run I always take a look at the weather forecast to make sure I have got tailwind on the way home. That makes a big difference.
Having underwear for your upper body made out of merino wool is also nice. It warms even if it’s a little moisty and best of all; it doesn’t smell.
Best!
Lars
See I don’t see the joy of running in freezing weather. Just all that gear, how cna you run comfortably? That’s why I don’t do it….LOL As much as the threadmill is BORING, atleast its not freezing! You are tougher than me 😉
Oh I made a similar meal tonight…..it was cod in stewed herbed tomatoes and black olives….delicious….but I will try the raisins next time!
Raisins! I couldn’t get over how good and oddly appropriate those raisins looked in that dish. That is when I could get beyond your winter running gear. Sorry. I’d be strapped to the treadmill. I don’t do snow. Wish I could ship you some of the 80 degree weather we had here today for a run.
