Boilermaker 2013

It was hot.  I don’t like hot.  Does ANYONE like hot? Probably not but some deal with it better than others.  The heat did affect the way I ran this years Boilermaker but it was still a shocker to see that my time was the same as last year. I was sure I would come in about 10 minutes slower. 21 water stops.  Ice and popsicles.  Not a space the entire 9.3 miles without spectators cheering runners to the finish line.  Even with all the support, I saw more people sick in this Boilermaker than I have in the last [...]

Wild Rice Salad with Lime Basil Vinaigrette

I’m still in recovery mode from too many races.  It’s a struggle to let my body heal because I want to get outside and run with the dogs, not for 30 minutes but for an hour or more. The weather has been cool and just perfect for an early morning run.  On the positive side, I’ve been in the gym this week using heavier weights and making my muscles work in ways they haven’t been used to working in months. I’m sore, not just my painful hip but sore from some healthy “body building”…or is that “body repair”?! The local [...]

Resilience and Kale Rainbow Slaw

From Stanton Samenow, a forensic psychologist and author of the 2004 book Inside the Criminal Mind. "They seem to have an unfathomable ability to shut off knowledge of the consequences, of the difference between right and wrong. There exists among us monsters.  It’s a scary world.  We cannot allow fear to get the better of us and stop us from living.  It’s our life. It’s our right to love, laugh, and advance our lives in the way we choose.  No one has the right to take it all away and they can’t unless we let them.  I won’t let them.  [...]

Break Time and Meatless: Two for Twice as Good

I had a really good run with Ted on Saturday. We ran over 9 1/2 miles at an easy pace. Sunday was a 16 mile run. It should have been a strong long run with a marathon pace last 6 miles.  It wasn’t.  I fizzled.  Not really bad but I didn’t have enough in me to get any where close to goal pace.  I spent the rest of Sunday morning and early afternoon in the kitchen and by 3 pm, began to crash. Monday morning everything hurt, from my neck to my feet.  That’s the body saying “It’s BREAK TIME!”.  [...]

Road Trippin’ and Kale Slaw with Walnut Crumble

All four of us jumped in the car and went on a holiday road trip. It was a rough start with Shane whining, Zoey leaping front to back, but after a couple of hours, when the dust settled so did the dogs.  We spent hours on the road before enjoying a night in a Best Western that only charged $5.00 per dog. ACES!  Usually it’s $10 to $20 per four legged friend.  The only glitch: The room didn’t have any heat (it was 35 degrees outside) and there were stink bugs hanging on the curtain.  We opted for a less [...]

FOFF Spring Mix Salad with Spiced Walnuts

Another delicious recommendation from Carla Vavala and found in her book Fusion of Food and Friends. This salad didn’t need any additional dressing and the walnuts were not so spicy since I changed the recipe but the entire salad mix sure was tasty. Serves 4 4 cups spring mix salad 1 cup walnut halves 1/2 cup sugar (*I used about 1/4 cup of Agave light syrup) 1/4 cup water 3/4 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp salt *clementine or mandarin oranges (*I used a southern corn and bean mixture, 10 oz can, heated then put on top of the salad) 2 TBS [...]
