USATF Masters 12K Championships By Hook Or By Crook

Part of the USATF Masters National Grand Prix, this race was comprised of such fast masters talented runners. What was I thinking?! Sandy Hook, NJ the Gateway National Recreation Area officially Highlands, New Jersey presented the landscape for this course. It was flat and fast. The race was a late starter at 9:30am with packet pickup the day prior or morning of.  There were a lot of teams represented however you didn’t have to be part of a team and could run independent which is what I did. Not a big swag event.  We got a nice t-shirt and if [...]

Faxon New Havon 20K Road Race

Signed up for this race to check my progress leading up to the Boston Marathon just over a month away.  I was fairly happy with the result. Initially, I was excited about this USATF race.  It wasn't quite a half marathon as 20K is about 12.42 miles.  Something about that gave me false confidence about it being a "short" race.  Anyway, as the day of the race approached, I started getting my usual extreme race nerves wondering what was I thinking that this was going to be "short and sweet"?!  Still, it would be a nice quick get away to [...]

Montezuma Festival of Races Half Marathon 2021

July 27, 2021 heat wave warning across the states.  What a day to run a half marathon when you don’t acclimate well to heat.  Did I mention the humidity?  This race did not go well.  Savannah, New York is about an hour and forty five minutes from our home and the official start time for the half marathon was 8:15 am. I registered late for this race because I didn’t want to drive out there alone and lucky for me, Shirley sent me a note saying she signed up. Great! I immediately logged on and got an entry.  We planned for me to drive to her [...]

Nate 12K 2021

I signed up for this race after the Total Image Running 10 miler about a month ago.  Then found out it conflicted with a very busy weekend of fun with friends.  We had friends staying with us from North Carolina and were going to be out at social gatherings day and night.  Not to mention the horseback riding the day prior to this event.  I hadn't been on a horse for over 18 years so wasn't sure how my legs would feel. I decided to shake out the legs for a couple of miles with Zoey on the Saturday morning [...]

Anthem Life Total Image Running 10 Mile Race

May 8, 2021.  It was a last minute decision to sign up for a race in Manchester, New Hampshire. Also an opportunity to see my nephew Sam and just an nice overall getaway. Manchester is a clean, seemingly safe spot to visit.  We stayed only two nights but enjoyed the area for walking as well as running.  It’s on the Merrimack River with walkways and trail paths to enjoy which follow the river. We stayed at a TRU by Hilton which was clean, minimal formalities, and extremely convenient to the Anthem race venue, right across the street at Arms Park. [...]

Two Rivers Marathon Festival Weekend: Double Half

I wasn’t ready for a marathon.  Not knowing how different in person (who would have thought we have to specify "in person") racing might be during this COVID-19 pandemic had me put marathon races on hold.  After the REVEL Mt. Charleston NV was cancelled for early April, I decided a half marathon might be just the thing to test out the “new normal” of racing. My running coach John @FixYourRun suggested the Two Rivers Marathon Festival in Lackawaxen, PA. All race distances offered at Two Rivers were along the same course, route 590, a total elevation gain of under 200'. [...]
