Owasco Man Triathlon 2012

It just amazes me how wide awake we are on the weekends, before the sun comes up, before our alarms go off.  If there is a race event, Ted and I are ready to go, no matter what the time. Saturday morning we were leaving the house before the sun came up, heading toward Emerson Park for the Owasco Man Sprint Triathlon.  Last year, we left late and had to really scramble to get Ted set up and over to the swim start which is quite a hike from transition.  This year, we had 45 minutes to spare.  The extra [...]

An Open Water Swim and Banana and Fresh Blueberry Yogurt Cake

What gloomy day for a swim, but Ted did it:  his FIRST 1 mile Open Water Swim. The warm up: The excitement: The finish: Such Sweet Success! One mile in open water. He had his doubts.  I didn’t.  While Ted was swimming the cool waters of Oneida Shores, Shane, Zoey and I were exploring the rest of the park: We weren’t done yet!  After the swim, the four of us drove over to Dave’s camp and put the docks into the water. It was busy day.  We were up at 5 am and got home at 2 pm.  It was [...]

Strong Bones and Beet, Fennel, Asian Pear Salad with Chickpeas

If you swim, have you noticed a slight soreness in your shoulders, back, maybe your legs, after doing laps in the pool? That’s water resistance. I naively assumed swimming was an upper body exercise. This email from SparkPeople opened my eyes to benefits for the other end of the bod: “…a recent study from Israel's Wingate Institute in Netanya indicates that women who frequently swim laps have greater leg bone mass than women who don't swim at all. Action Sparked: While weight-bearing exercises are the best way to strengthen your bones, swimming is another option, especially for obese exercisers who [...]

Swimming Crash, Here We Go Again, and Sweet or Savory

Last week when swim classes began, I wasn’t complaining too much because the water was warm. That simply means that I could stand it for 45 minutes before my thumbs went numb. This week, the folks at the college got smart and reduced the temperature. It was back into the “cold zone”. I toughed it out for 50 minutes on Tuesday night. Wednesday night, I was ok until I crashed into another swimmer. It completely freaked me out. The pool was crowded. Lap lovers were told to swim down the pool on a black strip and back in the blue [...]
