At Tempo and Chickpea and Red Chard Soup

As told yesterday, I’m taking this week as sort of a recovery week from running.  The Boston Marathon is only 7 weeks away.  I’d probably be impossible to live with if I attempted a complete week off from running due to that feeling every runner knows….”I have to keep running. Gotta keep training.  Can’t stop now. That ache/pain isn’t THAT bad….”  That’s not to say this week is easy.  I’m just taking every other day off and Tuesday was a tough run. I don’t like tempo runs.  For anyone asking “what’s a tempo run?”, it’s a run done at a [...]

FOFF Slow Cooker Garbanzo Bean Stew

Magical beans...don't get scared! If you eat these healthy little beauties often, your digestive system will adapt and you're subscription to "Bean-O" will be cancelled. Don't pass up all the benefits of beans including slow digesting carbohydrates, tons of fiber, antioxidants (important this time of year) and healthy protein. So much nutrition in such a little, low fat package. And so I present: THE BEAN. .... Whoops! Wrong "Bean".  That’s Zoe-Bean.  We want THIS bean: The Garbanzo Bean. We’ll be using it in the recipe from Fusion of Food and Friends.  But first, it’s important to understand why beans are [...]

Only So Wet and Shallot Soup

Another taper week.  I had a good run with the dogs on Monday after a total body gym workout then a really enjoyable long walk with them Tuesday after another total body routine.  Wednesday I’ll try to get a few 800’s in just to remind my legs that they can move a little faster than snails pace.  As usual days before a race, I’ve been checking the weekend weather for Albany.  The outlook isn’t good for Mohawk Hudson Marathon weekend.  I’m not usually one to gripe about running in the rain but running a MARATHON IN THE RAIN?!  …what to [...]

FOFF Soft Pretzels or Potatoes and Peas Soup (Stew)

Last week I promised we would make pretzels.  I didn’t let you down because a new FOFF member (and I sincerely hope she keeps cooking with us) was excited about making the pretzels.  She ran with the recipe and made it all her own.  Check out Spice’s take on “Aunt Carla’s Soft Pretzels” on page 8 of our book She did a great job with this recipe! My daughter loved it but because of no cheese dip she thinks they are next best to Auntie Anne's. I did tweaked the recipe a little bit but because of some mistake I [...]

Numb Thumbs and Lentil Soup with Escarole and Sweet Potato

I looked at the temperature and it was 32 degrees.  My body wasn’t ready for the cold nor did I relish the idea of running so many miles, dropping Shane off at home then going out again to finish the run.  I decided to start my 12 mile run with 4 speed miles on the treadmill. It was a good thing I did those 4 mile in the warmth of our basement because it was cold and windy outside. My thumbs were numb by mile 5 (outside miles) and I just wanted to get home but still had 3 to [...]
