Race Day Nutrition and Energy Bars

As usual, when my key race looms in the not so distant future, I begin thinking about all those necessary requirements needed to get from start to finish that should have been thought about at the beginning of training, when there was time to experiment.   You would think after so many marathons and other races, I would have nutrition, training, and strategies all worked out.  That’s not the case since needs change and strategies are adjusted to work towards optimal performance.  The bottom line here is that nutritional needs vary from person to person, situation to situation, race season to [...]

Energy Gels and Signs of Spring

Energy Gels and The first time I tried a GU I thought I would lose it. It was like a big wad of ….. (you don’t want to know) … in my mouth. I thought there was no way I would be able to suck those things down while running. How things change. I was determined to get used to energy gels since most runners I spoke to used them and they were easy to carry. So I adapted. BUT… I still make faces when swallowing that big glob of GU. Do they work? From Crank Sports …there are two [...]

First, The day before, Saturday Events:  We left for Corning at 9:20 am, leaving with family (Sue and Sam) and friends (Nancy and Bob). [...]

In the long run

Saturday morning was my scheduled long run. To be honest, I am better mentally and physically if I take a day off running preceding my long run.  That didn’t happen this week due to the Special Olympics Torch run Friday.  The morning run started out slow, Shane was with me.  We had a good hour and 10 minutes of trotting along. Two water stops for the Shaner.  The best part was finding the path into the parks. The only draw back was the horse flies.  The photo was taken with my cell phone.  This run was the first run I [...]

A 10 Mile Race The Heart Run

Ten miles at a pace of 9.21.  I’ll take it.  Considering I stopped for photos, it was a good pace. Let’s start this run re-cap with nutrition.  That’s always been my greatest concern when thinking about running longer distances. I began my ten mile run nutrition yesterday and it went like this: Breakfast:  1/2 cup Gluten Free Rolled oats cooked in water with 1/2 a banana, 1 TBS raisins and cinnamon. Topped off with 1 TBS Natural PB.  1 scoop of protein powder (20 g) with water and ice.  1/2 an orange. Mid Morning Snack:  3/4 of a  protein bar.  [...]
