Soldier On: Running Off Pace

I recently read Kara Goucher's recap of her New York City marathon back in November, 2014. If you ran that marathon you know the wind that day had to be factored into any planned pacing strategy. I feed off the determination and strength of our elite runners, often wondering if they ever hit the wall because they seem to just keep going no matter how beat up they look. Kara's recap, as is most of Kara's writing, makes her seem more like one of us average marathoners, suffering the way we do along the marathon road with feelings of defeat [...]

Get Tough When You Run and Baked Branzino with Herbs

Have you ever wondered how some runners/athletes can push themselves through the point of wanting desperately to stop?  This has always been my big question after finishing a race and not achieving a time goal.  Yes, we celebrate finishing and our ability to run the distance, but we look back and can’t help but ask “Why did I slow down/walk back there when I told myself I wouldn’t ?”  Another question:  “How do I get mentally tough to over come that urge to stop?”   The following quote by Sarah Bowen Shea “Run Like a Mother: How to Get Moving and [...]

Conquer Yourself and Bob’s Red Mill Muesli

“Yet those persons are happy and poets sing of them who conquer with hand and swift foot and strength”  Pindar, Greek Poet 500 BCE, as quoted in RRCA magazine, an article reprinted with permission by Mitchell Garner, RRCA V.P. During my 18 mile run on Sunday, I thought what a tough time I was having and cursed myself for walking while Ted ran on ahead.  Me, the seasoned marathoner walking while Ted forged ahead strong on his longest run to date.  My body didn’t have a lot to give after a 9 mile run on Saturday and I began thinking [...]

Respect the Marathon and Walnut Squares

Sometimes you do everything right. You put your heart and soul into weeks/months of training but then, for reasons beyond your control, the big day doesn’t go as planned.  All we can do is try our best.  Put as much time and effort into achieving our goals as life will allow. A quote from Deena Kastor’s 2007 recap of her Boston Marathon experience. I was well prepared and optimistic for this race. I was more fit for this race than when I ran a personal best and won the London Marathon last spring. This combination of facts is what is [...]

Ultra running links and Graeter’s Ice Cream

Reading about ultra running really helped to motivate me during marathon training.  I thought “If those folks can go 100 miles and endure the blisters, the heat, the extreme exhaustion, and everything else over more than 24 hours in some cases, I can certainly run through my aches and pains in under 4 hours”. If you are curious about ultra running and the stories these people tell, a good book to read is “Running Through the Wall: Personal Encounters with the Ultramarathon”. from page 247 … We tried to put the runner over the camel’s saddle, but he kept falling [...]
