Boilermaker 15K 2016 Recap

Do you realize how much stress can affect running performance?   Well let me tell you!   It seems the older I get, the more outside stress (independent of running and racing) affects my mental attitude and running capability.  Age? Oh yeah! Each year I DO get one year older but no, I will not allow that to be one of my many excuses for running, in my mind, sub-par. The week leading up to the 39th running of the Boilermaker 15K my thoughts were consumed by this race. I kept asking myself “What are you worried about?”.  There were no answers [...]

Check Your Legs Bike Race 2015

Ted’s first bike only road race. How exciting!  The race was called “Check Your Legs” put on my CNYC (Central NY Cycling) and is held in a very hilly area of upstate NY called Garrattsville.   The starting point is at the New Lisbon Town Hall.  2 or 3 laps depending on the wave choice. with limited parking but a nice little playground in the back, if it were a nice warm day which it wasn’t. The temperature was low 40’s with about a 10 mph wind BUT, the sun was shining. We arrived in plenty of time for check in [...]

TCS NYC Marathon 2014

In an article from RunBlogRun published online just after Kara Goucher’s NYC marathon performance, it stated that Kara had  planned on a 2:28 marathon and held steady until the 30K point.  Wind, cold, the faster pace got to her. She hit the wall for the first time in her career.  Hal Higdon’s comment about embracing a personal worst as you would a personal best is easier to read but not so easy to embrace, as copied from the article.  Kara finished the November 2nd TCS NYC Marathon in 2:37. The elite athletes motivate me.  They get nervous before a race [...]

Boilermaker 2013

It was hot.  I don’t like hot.  Does ANYONE like hot? Probably not but some deal with it better than others.  The heat did affect the way I ran this years Boilermaker but it was still a shocker to see that my time was the same as last year. I was sure I would come in about 10 minutes slower. 21 water stops.  Ice and popsicles.  Not a space the entire 9.3 miles without spectators cheering runners to the finish line.  Even with all the support, I saw more people sick in this Boilermaker than I have in the last [...]

And Then Some plus Last Chance Treat Squares

Only one more day until the Utica Boilermaker 15K road race.  Last year, I had a great run, PR’ing at 1:13:01.  This year, I have my doubts which isn’t the best way to go into a race but even with those doubts, I have my heart set on seeing something like a 1:12:XX.  If we take a look deeper into Joanne’s mind, we see she is STILL reaching for the ultimate Boilermaker goal race of 1:10.  It’s ok to chase dreams, right? The event Expo is today and tomorrow at the new local of MVCC.  The good:  It’s right across [...]

Fort2Fort 2012 Recap

I get so excited about running a race or maybe it’s the opportunity to run with humans instead of the dogs. Bipeds make me try a little harder to meet goal pace. Come the morning of the race, my stomach does flip-flops.  I scan the room filled with other runners and take note of all the women, wondering who runs at what pace and thinking to myself “I bet she’s a fast runner.”   I get myself in a state where I just don’t want to run.  I don’t want to run by myself either which is why I always go [...]
