Granola or Granula

Have you noticed how popular Granola has become?  It’s a breakfast cereal, a breakfast bar, a snack bar, and even an energy snack for hikers.  The oat based treat was originally called Granula by it’s founder Dr. Jackson in 1894 at the Jackson Sanatorium.  He promoted it as one of his health foods in the spa which operated in the early twentieth century. (Source: www.believecereals). Granola is basically oats, nuts, maybe a sweetener such as maple syrup, brown sugar or honey, and fruits. It’s made crisp by baking it and stirring while baking to break it up into loose pieces [...]

Lean, Smart, Healthy and Sweet Potato Quinoa

“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up”.   -Steve Prefontaine" Based on the book “Mastering the Marathon”.  Leaner is faster, lets just face it.  But perspective is needed. We perform our best at our leanest, healthiest body weight which is only achieved through effective training and proper nutrition. VO2 max, the ability to process oxygen and convert it to energy, is improved by weight loss. Simply a power to weight ratio.  This is harder to maintain as we get older but it doesn’t mean we have to put [...]

What a Day and An Orchestra of Vegetables

We finally got our bikes off the trainers and onto the road. We put on our shoes and set out along dry but gravely roads. It was a short ride for me, 10 miles with the promise of food at the end. The ride seemed easy.  I expected my legs to be a little resistant since I ran 20 miles the day before.  It seems recovery for me during this training season is very quick.  In fact, I ran 20 on Saturday, a little bit of cycling Sunday with a 3 1/2 mile walk, then Monday morning ran with Jen [...]

Peanut Butter Day and Banana Blueberry Low Fat Muffins

I ALMOST missed peanut butter day!  It was today, January 24th.  Unbelievable because I’m such a fan.  I mean, just look at the stash: How’d that Almond Butter get in there?!  Oh I know.  That’s SHANE’S favorite nut butter. From Huffington Post: If you didn't know, today (January 24th) is National Peanut Butter Day. So we thought we'd take a moment to honor the humble spread, not only for its role in our childhoods and its deliciously rich taste, but also for its nutritional power. Sure, the stuff is yummy, but did you know that peanut butter can also play [...]

Living Ageless with Food

Well, I did it again  …. I’m signed up for the  Philadelphia Marathon on November 20th, 2011.  Why? Because if I want a better marathon time, I have to keep entering marathons. So here we go again but more on that later.  For now, here is a lengthy write up about nutritional benefits of certain foods. LIVING AGELESS When we were on vacation, I picked up a copy of Natural Awakenings Magazine (S.W.FL).  It offered a good article on page 46 “Foods for Ageless Beauty: Nourishing Skin from Inside and Out”.  It’s inspiring to know that the foods we love [...]
