Nutrient Profiling for Your Own Table

In the issue of Nutritional Outlook for September, there was an article by Simon Pettman, EAS Strategic Advisor, regarding “Putting Nutrient Profiles Back on the Table”.  This article asked “How do you know whether your food meets the threshold for a claim of “low in fat/ sugar/ salt”?  Which foods are too high in fat/sugar/salt to bear any sort of health claim?  Currently the EU Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation is conducting further investigations regarding nutrient profiling. In the meantime, I have asked Leslie Johnson, a contributor to Masters In Healthcare to offer an article on the subject of Nutritional [...]

Happy New 2012! Health, Happiness, and Success

Is that your plan for the New Year? Health, Happiness, and Success. Believe it and make it happen. We brought in the New Year in Myrtle Beach.  We enjoyed the festivities at a few places and finally toasted at midnight in our favorite little place “Pawley's Island Pub”. Catching flys with my mouth wide open.  Our second stop of the night, “Creek Ratz” What a face!  I TOLD Ted we shouldn’t have had that Rum Runner!  Not sure why he’s pinching his nipple?!!! Better his than mine. Rich maintaining some normality in the evening and keeping both Ted and I [...]

Ingredients that are promoted for their healthy “ocular” benefits include Vitamin A, Beta-Carotene, Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Blueberry Anthocyanins and also one for our furry pet friends, taurine. Do you take a supplement for your eyes?  I have been taking 20mg of Lutein for the past eight  years.  I’m not sure if it has helped or not but my optician remains amazed that my eyes seem about six years younger than they actually are?!  Lucky me  (and I [...]

This Chapter in My Life and Apple Pean-ola

On the radio the other day, the interviewer asked the guest “If you named your life right now as a chapter in a book, what would that chapter be called?” I looked at Ted as we drove along and said “Amazing”. He said “excuse me?”  I said, “I’d name the chapter of my life right now “Amazing”. A wonderful husband.  A loyal dog and running partner.  My 2nd marathon, The 115th Boston Marathon in 3:47 (who could have imagined?!?) The California Raisin Bread Contest winner. The popularity of my award winning mini loaf.   The benefits and fun of using and [...]

Treadmills + Tiramisu

A guest post! I’m so excited about this great write up by J. Jacobs.  Read on friends and ENJOY! J. Jacobs is a guest blogger for An Apple a Day and a writer on ultrasound technician schools for the Guide to Health Education. Exercise can be fun! Did reading that make you want to reach through your computer screen and grab me by the neck? If so, you're probably one of many. Upon hearing the word, too many people associate "exercise" with pain, torture, obligation, etc. But it really doesn't have to be. Yes, you've probably heard this same message [...]
