Cross Training

Cross Train to Complement and Enhance plus Nutella Hugs

When you have a few months in between key running events, it’s advantageous to rest those running muscles and strengthen connective tissue, maintain aerobic capacity but give the joints a rest.  You can keep your fitness level up while allowing your running body to rest.  Here’s how (source: Sparkpeople). Complement Running: Swimming:  Rest the overworked lower body and develop the upper body muscles by swimming. Cycling:  This will tire out those legs but cycling focuses more on the quadriceps and shins as well as strengthening connective tissue in the knees, hips, and ankles. Indoor Rowing:  This is a tough one [...]

Cross Train and Five Bean Salad

A lot of folks promote cycling as a great cross training activity for a runner. Why? SOURCE:  TriNewbies  Well according to Rick Niles, spinning can actually make you a faster runner! This relationship between spinning and running lies on the hip rotation, specifically the relationship between cadence and the velocity of your hip rotation in degrees per second. Example: An individual pedaling at a cadence of 90 or 90 rpm’s, is rotation his/her hips at a velocity of 220 degrees per second. This is equivalent to a 6:45 per mile running pace. For those of us in the “average” running [...]

Cross training and Making Irish Cream Low Fat

Cross training day:  No Running and No Walking. Ted was in charge of Shane. What a day to leave him with it:  cold 24 degrees and snowy.  Glad I got out of that one! 45 minutes Elliptical Trainer + 15 reps x 4 sets running high knee lifts.  Chest and arms with weights. Finishing with 30 minutes on recumbent bike.  Just not as rewarding as running. Make Your Own Irish Cream (possible gifts for the holidays?) The first time I ever had Bailey’s Irish Cream I thought I’d gone to heaven.  It was the most wonderful tasting liquor I had [...]

A Box Of Oatmeal Cookies

Happy St.Patrick’s Day! Cross Training means you do something different from the event you are training for.  At least that’s what it means to me.  Since I am training to run longer races, my cross training days are spent doing anything BUT running, however may involve the occasional jog here and there.   Tuesday was a 55 minute cross training day which involved the following mix: 15 minutes of rowing. – not my favorite. 40 minutes of Elliptical. – I like E.T.-ing 25 minutes leg workout using machines. – UGG! 48 minute walk with the Shane Man, resulting in 3.12 miles. [...]

A Warming Experience

Accomplished:  A good workout.  Not quite as sweat inducing as when I run, but a good workout. 20 minutes of Elliptical & 10 minutes rowing (rowing is suppose to be good training for runners). 30 minute leg training: 4 sets x 12 to 15 reps each of 1. Hack squats with walking lunges. 2. Leg press with hyperextensions  3.  Extensions with seated calf raises  4.  Curls with standing calf stretches and ab crunches.  51 minute walk with Shane. I wore my YakTrax because the news casters said there was black ice. It actually wasn't that bad. The snow was falling gently [...]
