Boston 2022: Injured Runner

The year I didn’t make it to the starting line. An official “DNS”.  I did make it to the 5K for the first time since qualifying for Boston in 11 years so that will be my story this year. My left leg started hurting in January 2022 during training. The pain radiated from my butt and sometimes into my calf.  Running was not fun and during winter months in New York, it definitely has to be somewhat fun. I was scheduled to run the Houston Marathon, a race which had been on my bucket list for years.  Unfortunately, I believe [...]

Boston Marathon 2021 #Runto125

So excited to get back to Boston! This would be my 10th time running the course from Hopkinton to Boston.  I began the journey in 2011 and have qualified every year since. There was that hiccup in 2020 due to Covid but I ran virtually keeping my streak alive.  11 Boston marathons in the books and this is how 2021 went.  Spoiler alert: Better than expected. We came into Boston on the Friday this year making our usual stop at Morse Tavern for lunch but not so usual as we didn't drive the course into the city.  After 10 times, [...]

My own mortality

Life certainly gets more challenging as we add on the years.  No one warns us of the obstacles that we must overcome.  There is no guidebook.  I wish there was. In 2015 my mother passed away unexpectedly.  I thought she was going to be with us longer than my father but that apparently wasn't the Supreme plan.  I can't help but think how much easier caring for an aging parent would be if it were my mother who were with us instead of my father.   It seems women are more capable when alone than men as they age or [...]

Was it the computer or was it me?

There is not one iota of electronic technical intelligence existing in my brain. This is voluntary. Electronics don't interest me except that I enjoy being able to use them. When there is a problem such as not being able to turn on the television the joy of new technology quickly leaves my body. Just let me get out of my seat, press an "ON" button and turn a darned dial on the TV, opting for one of the 4 available stations instead of hundreds available for viewing nowadays. It's frustrating and confusing. So when our router/modem went south a week [...]

Boston Marathon 2015

The day was predicted to be one of those days you dread as a runner: temperatures mid 40’s, winds up to 20 mph, and rain.  It’s a race day when you think to yourself, “I signed up for this so I’ll run it and be all the stronger for it.”   The plan was to work hard at controlling my pace through those initial 8 miles.  In my four previous Boston Marathons, I’ve just let myself go because those are some fast first miles and the body feels so good.  All the surging up and down the rolling hills will bite [...]

Last Long Run Before Race Day

That last long run before your marathon.  If it goes well there is happiness and confidence going into the race.  If it doesn’t go well negative thoughts begin to bombard our thinking and set the stage for an epic fail of a race. Since a good run takes care of itself, lets look at a bad run and break it down.  This will be easy since today, I had one of those epic failure long runs.  Or did I?  Here’s the story and here is my running team: It’s important to note that going into this run, my legs had [...]
