8 Grain Hot Cereal Gets Me Through the Long Run

Trying to figure out what to eat the morning of a long training run is always tough for me.  Although I would like to mimic the food I’ll have race day morning, time doesn’t allow me that convenience.  You see, I get up and within 30 minutes, hit the road.  That’s not enough time to digest a multi grain or Ezekiel bagel.  So I’ll end up barely finishing instant oatmeal or I might choke down a banana which never settles well when I start to run.  What has been settling well AND allowing me a good, warm bowl of 29 [...]

Day After Portland Marathon 2014

All body parts were ready, willing, and able, although moving slower than normal.  Walking was the best solution and was done immediately after washing up following our 26.2 mile run as well as early the following morning. After cleaning up from our excursion around Portland with 9000 other marathoners (actually not sure of the runner count but that was what we heard), we went to Buffalo Wild Wings for sandwiches, tacos, beer and wine.   Hungry and thirsty for something other than post run healthy snacks and water, the ambrosia of fattier choices and alcohol went down pretty well. We did [...]

Product Enjoyment and Millet Salad with Cherries and Greens

Just recently, I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to review a few new things: fitness, food, books. Flexbelt:   Make sure to click THIS LINK and learn more! This is a fun product.  If you keep the setting low, it’s like a belly massage.  It you ramp it up a bit, you can feel a slight contraction in your abdominal muscles.  The best part is you don’t have to be in the gym to experience a stomach workout.  I put the belt on and then vacuumed the house.  Taking care of “two birds” if you will. Easy to use and guided start up [...]

Roasted Beets with Farro

Sometimes when we get those annoying cravings for something sweet, instead of turning to refined sugar products that simply serve to satisfy taste buds but do nothing by way of nutrition, opt for a nice beet salad or simply a few chunks of cooked beets tossed to the side of your favorite dish.  The beet is packed with goodness and sweetness. It will trick your brain  (and tongue) into thinking you gave it dessert.  Beets are highly nutritious and “cardiovascular health” friendly root vegetables. Certain unique pigment antioxidants in this root as well as in its top-greens have found to [...]

Almond Chocolate Chip Cookies: Gluten Free

Once again, Bob’s Red Mill brought an ear to ear smile to my face. Right before leaving for Boston, I received Almond Meal and Hazelnut Meal, two nutritious gluten free flours from Bob’s Red Mill.  Low in carbohydrates and rich in protein.  On each package was a recipe for chocolate chip cookies using the nut meals.  The following recipe uses the Almond meal and produced a soft cookie, firm texture and a lot of good flavor. Makes about 16 – 20 cookies depending on the size 3 cups Bob’s Red Mill Natural Almond Meal 1 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp [...]
