From the kitchen of Mary Mayer and posted by Chris, this lovely licorice flavored cookie brings back a lot of good memories for Utica Italians. It’s a must for that wedding cookie tray.
Anise Cookies
- 3 eggs
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 4 tsp anise flavoring
- 5 cups flour
- 3 TBS baking powder
- 3/4 cup shortening (butter or a healthy choice margarine)
- 1 cup milk
For the glaze, you will need
- 1 1/2 cups confectioners sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- dash of anise extract
Preheat the oven to 425 F. Mix all ingredients for the cookies, eggs through milk, then roll into a ball with floured hands, about 1 TBS of dough each cookie. Put on the table and roll into long thin pieces, shape as desired and place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake for 10 – 15 minutes.
When cooled, mix all glaze ingredients and spread on cookies.
Oh so good!
Another pretty little cookie for the cookie tray.
What’s up next? How about an Italian Meatball…..COOKIE!
Oh wow those look so good, I really wish I had a plate of those sitting in my room right now! Anything with sprinkles on top is good in my book 😛
Ive seen versions of these little treats around and have always fancied baking with Anise. I dont think i can find anise flavouring sadly but if i ever do then i will be sure to give these a shot 🙂 Truly lovely recipes and beautiful photos!
Sorry I won’t be at the wedding! You’ll send down some wedding cookies right? 🙂
I’m so glad you shared this one! I’ve been looking for this recipe for years. My dear old Italian neighbors used to bake these every year and share with us. Always been my favorite! Now I can make them too.
