Brookgreen Gardens Memorial Day 5K Run and Then Some

Sunshine, warmth and family. Does it … CAN it get any better? I’ll answer that: No.  Things are perfect down here in South Carolina.  Here is another recap of our days in Eden. Sunday: Zoey and I went for a 7 mile run in the morning. Easy as she goes through the plantation and gearing up for a 5K race later in the day. I felt surprisingly good for running 18 the day before.  One thing that I’ve been meticulous about while exercising in the warm weather is hydration.  I’ve been taking this before and after my runs: Phytosport Complete [...]

BOO! Pumpkin Spice Protein Shake

Did anyone dress up and party this past weekend?  We did. We ALL did. and finally…”PLLEEEAASE take this thing off of me!” Zoey:  “Hey guys. What are we doing?!” “Not real sure I like this” “I’ll try to escape…COME ON SHANE! We’re outta here!” and Zoey…”Ok. ENOUGH pictures. I’m sticking out my tongue:  NA NA!” The adults played as well:  Dr. D'Capitate and Nurse Honey. That nurses costume was pretty thin so I wore some red and white underneath. We went to the Turning Stone where Ted assured me there would by a lot of folk in costume. We got [...]

Lovin’ My Laundry – My Favorite Eco Friendly Products

This is the email I sent earlier in the week… Thanks to Naturally Savvy, I've found a wonderful, new and natural Laundry detergent that actually works on our sweaty, workout clothes. When I requested participation in the review of the Ecover laundry liquid, I was skeptical that the detergent could eliminate those strong odors clothing and towels get when exposed to those nasty, sweaty, super challenging workout days. But it came through! There is not flowery smell associated with the detergent and the clean clothing doesn't enter the dryer with any chemically enhanced odor "coverups". Clothes simply come out clean. Maybe we [...]

Trade Shows and all that comes with them

Trade shows: I’m not talking trade shows that we attend as runners or foodies or even wine tasting events, I’m talking the work kind when we are the exhibitors and it’s ALL work. The trade show we are working this week is in Philadelphia. The Atlantic Design and Manufacturing Show. Even though my partner and I arrived late in the afternoon on Monday, the show hall was so far from being set up, it was surprising. We thought we would be late and one of the last exhibitors to get our booth ready. Not the case. Even though the [...]

Boston 2012: The Hot One

An hour outside of Utica, on the road to Boston, MA, the heat warning messages began arriving from the BAA.org. It was only Saturday, there was still hope for cooler temperatures. By Sunday, the BAA was offering deferrals for next year. Would I defer? No way.  This was another challenge waiting to be conquered.  I knew I could go 26.2 miles, I just didn’t know how fast slow or how my body would deal with the heat.  I’ve never run more than 1 hour in temperatures over 78 degrees. Heck! I run before the sun comes up in the morning [...]

Inflammation Be Gone Shake and 30 Days to Fit

I’m feeling a little stiff from Saturday’s run.  We went for a long walk on Sunday to try and work out the kinks.  It helped but my hips and legs are still feeling the effects of a good long run.  The following shake is based on a recipe from Thrive: The Vegan Nutrition Guide by Brendan Brazier.  The walk yesterday, this shake and my easy run of 9 miles today sure helped to make the body better. Not too sweet. A little spice from the ginger. A very filling and rewarding way to start the day. The shake is packed [...]
