First of all –

THANKSGIVING_Turkey

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!  May yours be healthy, happy and safe.

Now for our furry friends, for which this post is dedicated.

These treats for the pooch are based on a recipe from Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bakery book.  Shaped liked fingers or any other shape you think your dog might enjoy.  Very easy and if you like the smell of bacon, you’re going to enjoy the aroma as these bake slowly in the oven for 3 hours.   Why not let your pup enjoy a special treat over this holiday as well? He/She deserves it.

Makes up to 3 dozen treats depending on how you shape them and how large/small the dog.

  • 1/2 lb sliced bacon – pre cooked.   Put between two paper towels on a plate and microwave for 1 minute.  If you purchase raw bacon, you will need to cook it to the point of being crispy then drain as much fat as possible.
  • 1 cup corn meal
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup vegetable or chicken stock – *just to make a dough
  • 1 cup cooked squash *I used butternut but you might use acorn or even one baked sweet potato, peeled and mashed.
  • 1 1/2 TBS ketchup
  • 1 egg

Preheat oven to 300 F.  Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.

Put all the ingredients into a food processor and process until smooth.

Form the dough into desired shapes. If making fingers as I did, you will use 1 to 1 1/2 TBS, elongate then drop onto the baking sheet.

Put into the oven and IMMEDIATELY lower the temperature to 200 F. Bake for 2 1/2 hours.  Turn off the oven and allow to cool for 30 minutes.  Remove.

Allow to cool completely before placing into a storage bag and into the refrigerator to use as rewards for good behavior.

All those cookies are in Shane’s bowl.  Zoey doesn’t dare take a bite.
